Could any kind opponaut out there with a carfax or auto check account run a VIN for me? I am looking to buy a 2011 Fiesta as a commuter car and just wanted to do a basic checkup on it.

VIN - 3FADP4EJ3BM103537

To thank you I present you Megan Fox instead of that creepy Car Fox.

Is it manual or automatic? I'll only check if it's manual.

I thought about the manual, but with planning to put 3000 miles a month on the car driving back and forth from NYC to Boston in stop and go traffic, it just didn't seem that appealing. The future weekend Miata is definitely going to be a manual.

Read up on the power-shift in the Fiesta. It has... quirks. Fiesta Faction is a good forum.

Make sure you do your research on that 6 speed Powershift transmission, particularly if it's an early build 2011. There are many TSBs out there and Ford dealers don't have a consistent approach in applying them.

I live in NYC and put a similar amount of miles on my 6 speed Jeep. There's no excuse not to drive manual, especially traffic. Getting an automatic for the 30% of the time when you're stuck in traffic is like wearing snow boots all year round for the 30% of the year when there's actually snow.

We had an auto fiesta rental car. It was a total dog. The trans was so bad, that my wife liked her Yaris better, and I have to agree, the way they had everything geared, the fiesta was awful. I say 2 thumbs down for the auto.

I will respectfully disagree. For work I get a lot of monthly rentals and I would say the Fiesta has been one of my favorite. The Yaris and Versa rank about the same for me, just above the bottom of the barrel Dodge Caliber. I am not looking for a lot of power, just comfort and good mpg. A Mazda3 was on the short list, but the MPG of the years I can afford just isn't what is should be.

I would normally agree, but last month I drove 3230 miles and the trip timer was at 98 hours. So that 30% of the time is 29 hours a month, or roughly an hour a day stuck in traffic. My last manual was a 91 5.0 Mustang, and maybe it is just too stiff of a clutch, but it was just miserable in traffic.

Thanks for the heads up, I have done a good amount of reading over on Fiesta Faction. This car has 32,000 miles, and is asking $9500, so it seems like a good deal to me. Should the trans have issues it is still covered under the powertrain warranty, and if I decided I hate it I should be able to get rid of it without taking much if any of a hit money wise.

Since people seems to dislike this option, I am open to other ideas. The requirements are:

10K Budget

Hatchback

mid-upper 30s highway mpg.

Cars that have already been in the mix are Mazda3, Fiesta, Focus, Golf TDI, Sportwagen TDI, Prius.

Any Mazda2's in your range? Also, how much room do you need? I just got a Fiat 500 and it's fine for me, doesn't feel cramped at all. I don't know how their autoboxes are, but every day I spend 2 hours in stop-and-go traffic and a manual has never bothered me much.

I see your point, you do a shitload of driving and want to make it easier. But sitting in traffic for an average of one hour per day ? That's really not a lot. I'm guaranteed at least that on my commute home, along with the hours I'm sitting in traffic during the day for work. My job requires me to drive all over Brooklyn and Queens most days, and the manual transmission is one of the only things that helps get me through it.

Also, I have a million email accounts and I'm to track down which one I used for Carfax, along with the other shit I keep getting distracted with. I'll let ya know.

I have an '11 Fiesta SE with a manual. I've heard less than awesome things about the auto, but the manual (minus the 14 foot long throw) is really light and easy. Obviously if you sit in traffic a lot, that could suck. Also, be aware that the 11 model did not have an option to turn of traction control and some people had issues on very icy/snowy hills, since the TC would kill power. Overall I've been getting 34-37 mpg average, depending on how mixed my driving is. The USB/Bluetooth/Sync option is really nice but the USB port is in a really terrible location. Seat heaters have also been a plus in this cold, but I had to look all over for the options I wanted PLUS the manual. Let me know if you have any questions. I used to use VSVIN site for free checks, but it looks like they shut that site down...

I haven't looked at the Mazda2, but I should, thanks for the suggestion. The Fiat is out because I was looking at 4 doors due to a possible future car seat need.

Gotcha.

I'll tell you, though, I saw you mentioned the '91 Mustang. No wonder you hated driving in stop-and-go with that thing. Most newer little cars have significantly lighter clutches. You may want to give them a shot before dismissing them entirely, but the truth is if an automatic is really what you want then you should get what you want and don't pay attention to what others say. After all, you're the one that has to drive it every day.

You at least have me questioning my decision now. I am mainly look for a good deal, but maybe I should be pickier about what type of trans it has.

not to throw too much in here but my wife's '09 civic has been a beast. We drive it down to NJ from boston many times per month. Decent, but a bit noisy of a ride (what do you expect at this price point), plenty of room inside, the auto isn't total crap, handles well on CT-15 going a bit over the limit. Not bad in NE weather with mich. x-ice 3 snow tires (ground clearance not great though). Most of all, this thing is a tank. its been hit multiple times...including me understeering it into a curb and all it needed was an alignment. With regular maint, which I do myself for damn cheap, it has been dead reliable. We have put 50K+ miles on it in the last 2.5 years.

**there was a bad Front-Right wheel bearing at 32K but it was covered under warranty without hassle.

I haven't look much at the Civics, but a Fit has been on my short list. I love the amount or space, and how easy it would be to get some bikes in the back. Downside is MPG and it just doesn't feel as modern as some of the newer date (interior feels sparse and dated).

That is a decent deal. I paid $9800 for mine in October, a 2011 SE Powershift with 14K miles. I wanted a manual but this car was about $2K cheaper than anything else around at the time. The Powershift is a decent transmission once the relevant fixes have been applied, and if the driver understands that it isn't a conventional automatic transmission with torque converter, and that the operation/feel is going to be rather more like a manual transmission.

Ive just found that every VW tht owners bitch about, it 90% of the time built in mexico. so i tend to stay away from cars built there.
